Jobs on an oil platform: Medical Officer

Most of the medical needs are for illness rather than injury. Today, Jane has something in her eye and Roy is about to check it.

Roy is the medical officer on the platform. He has been working offshore for 19 years and enjoys the freedom and responsibility the job offers as well as the range of complaints he has to deal with.

Most offshore medics are registered nurses through the NHS or the army. They have to take additional offshore training to bring them up to the necessary level.

Roy sees everything from colds and flu to skin complaints. Most of the problems are illnesses rather than injuries. The most common injuries are to the hand or back.

The platform had an evacuation last year for a case of tonsilitis.
