5.8 Food and the Law
There are many stages in the chain from farm to table. The activities of food suppliers and handlers at every step are governed by UK and EU food safety legislation. The government set up the Food Standards Agency in April 2001 with the mission to make the food we eat safe, and to offer independent, balanced advice. It has a website which includes very detailed information on food laws:


The main laws are:

  • Food Safety Act 1990
  • Food Safety (General Food Hygiene) Regulations 1995

But there are individual laws for certain foods like meat or shellfish.
